Epiphytic
plant, very variable in size, with short stem completely enclosed by imbricating
leaf-sheaths. Roots numerous, flexuous, glabrous. Leaves fleshy, rather numerous, arcuate or pendent, almost oblong-elliptic or elliptic or obovates, sometimes oblanceolate, acute or obtuse, at conduplicate base base, of more than 30 cm. long for 9 cm. wide, ducted underneath. Flower stalk almost sub-erect or aruate, simple or branching, giving "keikis easily", longer than the leaves. Rachis distichou, slightly in zigzag. Bracts ovate or triangular, concave, acute, of 5 mm. Flowers fleshy, waxy, very variable in size, reaching 6 cm. Dorsal sepal elliptic or oblong-elliptic, acute or obtuse, distinctly carinate dorsally. Lateral sepals obliquely ovate-elliptic, canaliculate above, distinctly carinate dorsally. Petals at cuneate base, elliptic or ovate-elliptic, acute or obtuse, slightly smaller than the sepals. |

Observations

Very variable
species in size and by the colouring of the flowers. The background is
whitish with transverse or horizontal bars magenta or violet/amethyst
or brown/red. Colouring appears on the ventral face of the segments whereas
the back remains silvery white. The lip is clear carmine , yellow at the
base and on the callus of the lateral lobes. The column is mauve with
a yellow/greenish anther. |

History

Introduced in 1864 by the establishments Low and Co of Clapton which had confused it with Phalaenopsis equestris. The first flowering took place at Lueddemann, horticulturist in Paris into 1865 which gave him its name. | |||||||||||||||||||||
